Dorothy M. Karnes, 85, of Janesville, WI passed away Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Nursing Home. Dorothy was born was born in Janesville on July 31,1925, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Henke) Elser. She grew up in Janesville, attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from Janesville High School in 1942. She married Walter E. Karnes on August 29, 1959 at St. Paul‘s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Janesville. They resided in Whitewater from 1959 until 2007 when Dorothy moved to Janesville to be closer to Walter after he became a resident of St. Elizabeth . Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper for Commercial Bank and then for many years by McLay Auto Parts. She was also a caregiver for her mother, husband and several other relatives and family members over the years. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Whitewater.

Surviving are one brother-in-law, Donald Karnes of Whitewater, one niece, Kathy (Bill) Ewalt, of North Carolina, two nephews, Robert (Jane) Karnes of Palmyra, Virginia, Jeffrey W. (Sonia) Elser of Janesville, great-nieces and great-nephews, Chris (Jenny) Elser, Eric (Andrea) Elser, Mary Ewalt, Bob Ewalt, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, Justin, Hannah, Joshua and Grace Elser and special friends, Nancy Morgan and Mark Droegemueller. Her husband, Walter preceded her in death on April 2, 2008. She was also preceded in death her parents, her brother, Donald Elser, a brother -in-law, Robert Karnes Sr., and sisters-in-law, Doris Karnes, Marian J. Elser and Marion L. Elser.

A special thank you to the nuns and staff of St. Elizabeth Nursing Home for their loving care of Dorothy.

Funeral services will be at Noon Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, 1010 N. Wright Rd., Janesville with Pastor Paul Scharrer officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Whitewater. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until Noon Thursday at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Nursing Home, Janesville or St. John’s Lutheran Church, Whitewater.
